WhatsApp Hacked? DO NOT Delete the App — Read This First
Recently someone was hacked on WhatsApp and was told to delete the app immediately.
That advice sounds logical — but in most cases, it actually makes recovery harder.
Here’s what you need to know.
How WhatsApp Accounts Get Hacked
Most WhatsApp takeovers happen like this:
-
Attacker gets your phone number.
-
They request a WhatsApp verification code.
-
You receive a 6-digit SMS code.
-
They trick you into sharing that code.
-
They log into your account on their device.
This is called social engineering, not “phone hacking.”
No one broke into your phone.
You unknowingly gave away the key.
Why Deleting the App Is a Bad Idea
When your account is hijacked:
-
Your number is still tied to that WhatsApp account.
-
The attacker has activated it on their device.
If you delete the app:
-
You lose quick access to re-verify your number.
-
You delay the recovery process.
-
You may lose locally stored backups (if not cloud-backed).
-
You remove your fastest method of regaining control.
Deleting the app does not kick the attacker out.
The attacker only loses access when you re-register the number on your device.
What You Should Do Instead
Step 1: Reinstall or Reopen WhatsApp Immediately
If still installed:
-
Open it.
-
Enter your phone number.
-
Request a new verification code.
If deleted:
-
Reinstall immediately.
-
Register your number again.
When you successfully enter the verification code:
WhatsApp automatically logs out the attacker.
Only one active device per number is allowed. Usually. If it’s logged in as a companion device, you will need to go to LINKED DEVICES then manually log out all devices in the list.
Step 2: If You’re Locked Out (Two-Step Verification Enabled)
If the attacker enabled two-step verification:
-
You may see a message asking for a 6-digit PIN.
-
Tap “Forgot PIN”.
-
Wait for the reset option via email (if previously set).
-
If no email was set, you may need to wait up to 7 days.

Step 3: Contact WhatsApp Support
If you cannot regain access:
Email:
support@whatsapp.com
Include:
-
Full phone number in international format (e.g., +1 876 XXX XXXX)
-
Description of the issue
-
Date/time you lost access
Or use the official recovery page:
https://www.whatsapp.com/contact
After You Recover Your Account
Immediately:
-
Enable Two-Step Verification
Settings → Account → Two-step verification -
Add a recovery email address.
-
Check:
Settings → Linked Devices
Remove any unknown devices. -
Warn your contacts not to respond to suspicious messages sent from your account.
Important: Common Scam Messages
You may see messages like:
-
“I accidentally sent you a code, can you send it back?”
-
“Vote for my child in this competition.”
-
“Click this link to secure your account.”
Never share:
-
SMS verification codes
-
WhatsApp PINs
-
Email verification links
WhatsApp will NEVER ask you for your 6-digit code.

Final Advice
Deleting the app does not secure your account.
Re-verifying your number does.
If you or someone you know gets hacked:
Act quickly.
Do not panic.
Do not share codes.
Regain control by registering the number again.
