Windows Update Problems - KB5063878

INTRODUCTION

This is a hot topic around 2025-08 and is surprisingly still ongoing. Apparently this update causes SSD drives to fail due to excessive background writing. This topic on SSDs and failures was loosely touched on in another thread. Let me give some info on how to find it and how to remove it based on what I’ve found so far.

What I find most absurd is the fact that it’s been more than a week and Microsoft hasn’t pulled this update. This potentially kills SSDs - including SATA and M.2 drives.

More Info

You can do some searching around if you like.

2025-08 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 24H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5063878) (26100.4946)

Or just search for - KB5063878.

Basically - flash memory has a finite write cycle. This update causes excessive writes in the background which then greatly reduces the life of your SSD. This then may lead to drive failure as the total write cycles are exceeded. You can read some more on it by searching for “SSD write cycles” on Google, which would bring up links like the one below.

THE PROCESS

Firstly - you want to ensure that your system is up to date. If not - let it finish. Even if this means it’ll install the undesired update. You can find this by clicking on settings from the start menu (the gear icon in the start menu) and then clicking on Windows Update at the bottom. You can also search for it in the start menu - Windows Update.

Once it’s done your system may have rebooted - open your settings then go to Windows Update and scroll down if needed then open “Update History”. If your system was already up to date, just go to “Update History”.

Scroll down and go to “Uninstall Updates”.

Look through for the offending update and click “UNINSTALL”.

You’ll get some warning and details - but remove it all the same.

It may take a little while - but it’ll go.

On completion it’ll ask you to restart. Do that.

You may get a screen like the one below - just wait it out and bring your system back up.

Once that’s done we’ll move to blocking all updates until we know things are OK.

IF IT FAILS

You may get an error like this.

There’s some topics online about the error. Some of the top results if you check for “0x800f0825” would be about removing KB5063878.

Basically - disable Windows Sandbox - reboot - remove. That’s the most common fix. You may have to go a bit more in-depth if that doesn’t do it for you though.

STOPPING UPDATES

On A Domain

If you have a work computer that’s a part of a domain, there may be a WSUS server available. If yes - the admins can approve or deny certain updates. They’d then have to ensure that the troublesome update is denied.

More reading info below.

If you are on a domain and your admins did the homework - you should be fine. If they didn’t - then some rollbacks may be required.

If you’re not on a domain - continue reading.

Not On A Domain?

Once you’re done and the offending update is removed, you’ll have to block ALL updates until this is resolved. The tools I’ve used to do this are:

Some of the pages may not have download links. You can get some of them off MajorGeeks. Try not to find the tools on some disreputable sites that may infect your systems.
